A former slave, Frederick Douglass rose to prominence as an abolitionist, speaker, lecturer, writer, newspaper publisher, and vice presidential candidate. Engraved on the front of his headstone are the words:
"To The Memory of Frederick Douglass 1818 to 1895. By His Sons Lewis H. & Charles R."
